Mukhaye
A Letter from the Editor
Bungoma, Kenya
Welcome to Mukhaye.
For years, this magazine lived quietly in my imagination. I carried it with me from one film production to another, across countries and continents, always returning to the same question: where was the publication that reflected the fullness of an African woman’s life?
Not a version of her reduced to resilience. Not a distant idea of her shaped by someone else’s gaze. The woman I knew was building a career, planning a wedding, caring for her hair, choosing what to wear, making a home, deepening her faith, travelling, resting, beginning again. She could be ambitious without surrendering softness, and feminine without making herself small.
Mukhaye was created for that woman.
This is a place where African women are not a trend, a demographic or an afterthought. We are the centre of the story. Our lives are considered in their richness and specificity, from the traditions that formed us to the choices through which we are forming ourselves.
My hope is that you will find beauty here, but also substance. Ideas worth carrying with you. Practical guidance that respects your intelligence. Stories that feel familiar in the best way, and others that open a door onto a life unlike your own.
After years of imagining Mukhaye, I am delighted that you are here to experience it.
Come in. Take what speaks to you. And make yourself at home.
